Pradeep Rai is a first generation lawyer who serves as a Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, with about 3 decades of distinguished experience in civil, criminal, revenue, constitutional, and commercial litigation. Designated as a Senior Advocate in 2015, he has represented a diverse clientele before the Supreme Court, High Courts, and tribunals. This Includes Indian leaders, celebrities, courts, corporations, and authorities. Rai provides valuable insights into the inner workings of the Honourable Supreme Court.
He has acted as amicus curiae in matters involving state governments, the Airport Authority, and judicial reforms. He also Served as Court Commissioner for the Guwahati High Court to report on road conditions in Nagaland and conducted a probe for the Allahabad High Court into irregularities in asset allotments by the Noida and Greater Noida Authorities.
His institutional leadership includes two terms as Vice President and one as Senior Executive Member of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). He founded and chaired several SCBA sub-committees, such as Grievance Redressal, E-Committee, Health, Bar Coordination, Cultural, and Training & Professional Excellence Committees. Key initiatives under his tenure encompassed land allotment for lawyers, establishment of a Railway Reservation Counter at the Supreme Court, and discounted welfare schemes for advocates.
Previously, he acted as Vice Chairman of the National Anti-Doping Agency. Rai has collaborated closely with fellow senior advocates, appeared in sensitive cases before the Supreme Court, High Courts, and commissions of inquiry, and contributed to prison reforms alongside former Hon’ble Chief Justices M.N. Venkatachaliah and J.S. Verma.
Currently, Rai chairs the India Legal Research Foundation and India Legal Aid Centre, focusing on access to justice, legal awareness, evidence-based research, and policy innovation.
He serves as Vice President of the Indian Society of International Law and President of the Society for Human Rights and Civil Liberties.
A proponent of mediation and arbitration, he has trained over 300 lawyers in these methods and mentors young professionals through internships and capacity-building programs. He leads welfare efforts for lawyers, including affordable housing and healthcare, and participates in national and international seminars on access to justice. For more than two decades, he has engaged with diverse media spaces, both national and international, on issues relating to legal awareness.
